[SL] Part 5 – Treasure It

Years ago, when I started working, I attended a course on how to choose suitable clothings and accessories. Thanks to the course, I made wise purchases and the items in my wardrobe last me a long time.

I still have dresses bought around 2008!

Unknown to me at that time, this was also a step towards sustainable living.

In today’s world of Facebook, Instagram and online shopping, it’s easy to fall into the trap of buying the latest fashion items and gadgets. Way too easy.

So I’ve grown to be very mindful before buying something, anything.

After buying, I treasure the item until it cannot serve its purpose anymore.

And my children are learning to do the same. They have a limited number of toys and are expected to keep them in good condition.

As they outgrow toys or clothes, I’ll pack the items aside for recycling or donation.

QUICK IDEAS

For items that are worn out:

– send for recycling where possible

For items that we’ve outgrown:

– pass to relatives or friends

– donate to a bless shop

– sell as secondhand items

One huge benefit about sustainable living is saving money, either immediately or over the long-run.

In short, we only buy “treasures” when necessary and then treasure them for as long as we can.

IMPLEMENTATION

Look into your wardrobe, or around your room or house.

Find one item that you love.

Think about how you’ll treasure and care for it.

Think about where you’ll send it to when it has finished serving its purpose.

That’s it for today. Stay tuned for the next email.

P.S.

Since I mentioned dresses, our family rarely has to buy clothes.

We’ve filled our wardrobe with classic pieces in a few colours that match well.

By limiting the colour variations, the clothes also easily match other accessories such as shoes and bags.

Oh, the other benefit is that our clothings take up minimal space. Sustainable living makes so much sense.
