When our family travels with 3 children, we try going green where possible. Here are some simple ways:
1. Bring reusable water bottles to refill at water stations or during meal times. We also boil water for drinking but the kettle is often too small for our family and it takes time to cool the water down. Ideally, hotels should provide a water station on each floor.
2. Bring reusable food containers for snacks or packing food.
3. Bring reusable fabric bags to carry shopping. I like the thin foldable type and always have at least 2 when going out. Paper bags take up too much luggage space anyway.
4. Bring travel-sized toiletries so that we don’t need to open the miniature bottles provided. If we do use them, bring home to finish using and reuse the bottles. Or send them for recycling.
5. Wrap leftover bar soap and bring home to finish using.
6. When the kids were younger, we travelled with modern cloth diapers if the apartment had a washer and dryer.
7. Bring reusable wet bags or reuse plastic bags to temporarily store damp or wet stuff.
8. Buy only what is meaningful and needed. Each of us writes a short shopping list before travelling. We prefer cultural tours over shopping sprees, which encourage impulsive purchases.
9. For accessible places, walk or take public transport such as buses and trains.
10. Use local recycling bins for our waste.
If you’ve more ideas, do share them with us. Happy green travelling!
